Seward Rotary Club Distributes Hundreds of Dictionaries to Area Third and Fourth Graders in Seward
The Seward Rotary Club distributed hundreds of dictionaries to area Third and Fourth Grade students at no cost to the students in an effort to acquaint the students with the dictionary process and battle to assist with literacy improvement. The dictionaries were distributed to the students by local members of the Seward Rotary Club to each class and they discussed the project with the students. Each student was told to write their name on the dictionary, as it was theirs to keep!
The dictionaries are presented this year to honor long time Seward elementary teacher, Jan Matzke. Each year the Seward Rotary Club honors a local, long time teacher from the Seward area and presents the dictionaries in their honor. The dictionaries are purchased by the Seward Rotary Club through the National Dictionary Project in Charleston, NC. Since 1995, over 30,000,000 dictionaries have been distributed to schools and students across the USA, with almost two million dictionaries distributed last year. This is a major, annual project of many Rotary Clubs across the nation and internationally.
Because the project did not take place locally last year, the Seward Rotary donated dictionaries to both Third and Fourth grade classes in the Seward area. St. John Lutheran School receives their dictionaries from the Prange family, as a memorial to their parents, Truman and Esther Prange.
Local distribution was given to Seward Elementary Third Grade classes-Deb Snell by Rotarians Clark Kolterman and Ken Schmieding, Amanda Clouse by Rotarian Jane Rehmer, Michelle Smith by Rotarians Greg Butcher and Alan Baldwin, Suzanne Pascka’s class was delivered by Rotarian Ron Niemoth and his wife Bea. In the Fourth Grade, dictionaries were presented to Deena Haberman’s class by Rotarians Greg Zabka and Kurth Brashear, Maddy DiSimone by Rotarian Chuck Matzke and his wife Jan, Krystal Luebbe’s class by Rotarian Rick Gray, and Jody Greisen’s class by Rotarian Chuck Matzke and his wife Jan.
Dictionaries were distributed at Seward’s St. Vincent’s School to their Third Grade Class taught by Alissa Hoxmeier and their Fourth Grade class taught by Jody Meister. They were distributed by Rotarians Mike Meyer and Richard Snow.
The Seward Rotary Club has distributed the special dictionary-“The Best Dictionary for Students” for decades, sharing thousands of dictionaries at no cost to the students. They distribute them to local third graders through the Dictionary Project based in Charleston, South Carolina. For more information on the program visit wwwdictionaryproject.org or call 843-846-2706.
